Frederiksberg, Denmark

City bike sharing was first introduced in Copenhagen in 1995. This was the first scheme of its kind anywhere in the world and allowed people to borrow a bike around town simply by inserting Danish kroner into a slot, refunded on return similar to a supermarket shopping trolley.

More recently Copenhagen wanted to upgrade to ensure the city remains the leader in urban green mobility, so after putting the public bike share to tender in 2011, Gobike’s system was chosen to do so and the Danish capital’s new sharing system was branded ‘Bycyklen’.

The distinctive white bikes you will find all around Copenhagen are increasing in number and by 2015 are expected to total 2,000, along with up to 65 docking station locations.
